Annie-Wonder Woman

In India, everyone (middle class & up) has house help. There are so many people that live in this country and so many people that need to be employed that this is one of the ways that people are able to make a living.

Some houses come with helpers (meaning the workers live there & work for whoever is renting the house) while other houses just employ workers for specific tasks. You can hire people to do anything under the sun and it is very inexpensive. Some families will have a driver, a cook, a cleaner, and a gardner (for their 10 potted plants on a balcony...no one actually has a garden!)

Every-day tasks are much harder here than we're used to so it is an incredible blessing to have help. We have a helper named Annie who actually speaks English (which is wonderful & hard to find!) She helps clean our apartment and cook dinner. She also will run small errands for us, which is amazing because we don't have a car and going anywhere with 3 little bitties is a challenge! To get anywhere, I have to take auto-rickshaw, so grocery shopping is virtually impossible..with the kids, bags, & food. Each day, I just send Annie (or I go with the kids in the stroller) down the street to the little roadside shop & we buy milk, bread, etc. There are not really any sidewalks, so I'm just "off-roading" in the stroller over piles of gravel & pot-holes...creating quite a spectacle I'm sure! :) Annie cooks good Indian food so the kids and Brent are loving it! We don't have a stove top (those don't come standard in a home) so she goes downstairs to a friend's apartment & cooks for us. Then she brings it upstairs & puts it in the fridge for our dinner. She also washes all our dishes because there are no dishwashers here. It seriously is a gift from the Lord to have her here to help us!
