Indian Pranks

We like to joke and say we got pranked when things happen here that we can't control or that are very "India!"

Here are a few examples..

1. We had no hot water for 2 1/2 weeks... a plumber came at least 5 times. One day he was here for most of the day and each time they would tell us it was almost working but then it wouldn't and they'd have to come back a few days later. They finally fixed it (after numerous phone calls & visits) and then the water was so scalding hot you couldn't even use it!! Go figure! :) {I don't want to jinx it but it is actually working tonight!!} :)

2. The electricity has been going out often because it's starting to get hotter and people are using more of it. If it goes out while you're in the elevator, it's supposed to have a "back-up" mode so you don't get stuck but it often doesn't work. Our friend was visiting us this afternoon and had just gotten done telling me how he hadn't gotten stuck in the elevator yet since he'd lived here. Three seconds after he left, I got a phone call and he was stuck in the elevator in between floors!! Sutton and I had to go hunt down the guards to try to fix it and get him out!

3. You can't drink the water here so each apartment has a water purifier but ours doesn't work. The landlord has promised us, every single week that we've been here that it is coming THAT week. Each time Brent calls him, he says, "Oh yes, it is coming this week and will be here on Friday." Then when Friday rolls by & he calls, the reply is, "Oh yes, it is definitely coming on Tuesday." and on and on. We have yet to see that water purifier so every day, we lug big bottles down to our friends' apartments and fill them up so that we can have water to drink, cook with, wash our fruit, etc. It's become the family joke that we have to stick around the house tomorrow to wait on the water purifier installer who is definitely coming!!

4. Cell phone plans are very inexpensive here. In fact, we just brought our phones from America, put an Indian sim card in them, and use our normal phones. The only problem is that Brent's phone never works for some mysterious reason. They will send him a text message telling him that a payment is due & then cut his service off 30 minutes later. So he'll have to go down to the phone store (a 20 minute drive) and pay some random charge to have it turned back on. Then it will happen a few days later. This has been going on since we got here and is incredibly annoying. When you go in to pay, they just hand-write your phone number in a giant notebook & record how much you pay then they text you a receipt a few hours later. The system makes no sense. It happened again today so he went down & got into it with them only to have them tell him that they don't know why this keeps happening and they will have to wait 9 days to figure out what the problem is?!?! {I think he might just chunk his phone into the river! Ha!}
